HISTORY
G / Dorape Maha Vidyalaya has a long history of decades. It started as a mixed school in particular and has gone through many historical milestones on its way to becoming a national school today. This is very clear from studying the historical sources at the school.G/Dorape Maha Vidyalaya was established on 23rd June 1933 by the Chief Incumbent of Yatagala Hettagala Maha Pirivena Ven. Kalahe Gunaratana Thero as “Dorake Mixed School”. During the tenure of Ven. Kalahe Gunaratana There as the Principal, a group of 60 students studied in the Bandaranayaka Hall of the school.
Free education was blocked by the British monopoly government. As a result, Dorape Vidyalaya also received minimum facilities and privilages from the government.
Based on the current situation, the school was restored by purchasing not less than seven acres of land belonging to a Tamil woman named 'Chinthamani' in the village of Bogahagoda. The Dorake Mixed School was later renamed the “Dorape Buddhist Mixed School”.
With the re-establishment of the school, the education of the school became systematic. Mr. A.D.A. Seneviratna was appointed as the Principal on March 18, 1935 after Ven. Kalahe Gunaratana Thero. As it was a period of British rule, the influence of the English government increased. That is to say, various festivals and festivities belonging to the English were held at this school. In addition, most of the teachers who imparted education at that time were burghers. The Log Book states that on May 6, 1935, Sir George celebrated his Fifth Jubilee in our school. Education at that time was provided by a teacher named 'Donna Matilda'. About 87 students were educated at that time. After independence in 1948, school administration changed. New teachers and new principals were appointed. Subsequent school development received many benefits from the government. With the advent of free education, school education began to move in a new direction. Our school has been governed by about 23 principals from the past to the present. According to the educational reforms that have taken place over time, our school became a Navodya School on 23rd January 1999. After that it was renamed as “G / Dorape Navodya School”.
Our school, which conducted classes from Grade 1 to Grade 13, was developed as a secondary school in 2012 under the project of developing 1000 secondary schools. As a first step, the foundation stone was laid for the Mahindodaya Laboratory on October 1, 2012. On 11th March 2014 our school became “G / Dorape Secondary School”.As a result, students were able to study A / L in all four subjects - Arts, Commerce, Science and Mathematics. Currently, classes are conducted from Grade 6 to Grade 13.
G/ Dorape Secondary School became a National School on June 2, 2021. In the near future, our school will develop into “G / Dorape National School”, one of the leading schools in the area with all facilities.
